A dense forest situated between Mysore plateau in Karnataka and the Nilgiri mountains of Tamil Nadu, the Nagarhole National Park, also called the Rajiv Gandhi National Park, is home to a staggering variety of wildlife species. One of Karnataka's best wildlife getaways, the park is set over a 640 square kilometers and is more appealing than the adjacent Bandipur National Park because of the fewer number of visitors it sees. Teeming with Asiatic elephants, spotted and barking deer, langurs, cheetals, gaurs, nilgais and over 270 species of birds, it makes for fantastic wildlife watching. Tourists can explore the park astride elephants, in open jeeps or a bus. The Nagarhole Park also features a dwindling number of Royal Bengal Tigers, although one has to be extremely lucky to spot the big cat.
